What is Wakakirri?

Wakakirri is a national story sharing festival for primary schools- promoting sustainability. Wakakirri comprises of programs for city, country and outback schools and aims to teach all students about themselves and others through the creation and sharing of stories- no matter where they live. The Festival challenges students to create a story, make a positive impact and share it with Australia. The focus is not on big budgets but on creativity, this is why Wakakirri is FREE to enter making Wakakirri accessible to all schools.

“Wakakirri is from the language of the great Australian Story Tellers and original masters of sustainable living, the Aboriginal Wangaaypuan people. It describes the process of story telling through dance”

Create a Story

There are six Wakakirri story categories to choose from including dance, song, spoken word, film, arts and writing. Schools can tell any story they wish and are limited only by imagination, they can convey community messages and opinions or simply send a timely reminder about the important things in life. Everyone has a story to tell, why not tell the story of your school or wider community.

“Our story was about celebrating differences. We all share one thing, a heartbeat” - Primary Teacher WA

Make a Positive Impact- Be Sustainable

A Wakakirri story can make a positive impact in many ways, from its creation through to the message that you wish to communicate through your story. Making a positive impact can also mean many other things like: What did you learn? How sustainable was your production? Did you minimise your footprint?

Share your story with Australia

Wakakirri makes it easy for schools to share their stories with others across Australia through live performances, online mediums and exhibitions held at each Wakakirri show. The stand out stories of the year are compiled and showcased on a souveneir DVD which is then sent out to every single school in Australia!

“The kids had a ball! For many it was their first time on stage, it was also great exposure for our school” - Primary Principal NSW

The Wakakirri Prize

The annual Wakakirri Prize is the ultimate award for schools to receive. The Wakakirri Prize will be given out to one school across each of the three Wakakirri categories: City, Country and Outback. The prize is to acknowledge the efforts of those schools creating the most positive impact on the world around us. Schools are judged not on the strength of their Wakakirri work, but on how they have used their entry to spread awareness within their school,  local and wider communities. Every Wakakirri school can nominate themselves to receive the Wakakirri Prize.
